Eigentlich ist der Name RFC (= "Requests for Comments" == "Forderung nach Kommentaren") ziemlich falsch. Sie sind aber historisch so gewachsen und haben daher ihren Namen behalten, obwohl sie eine Art Standard darstellen. Man darf nicht vergessen, daß das Internet (damals noch ARPANET) als wissenschaftliches Projekt gestartet ist. Daher sind diese Vorschläge bis Heute bei Ihrem alten Namen geblieben. Um verabschiedete/beschlossene RFC's von Neuen unterscheiden kann, wurde der Status eingeführt:
- Informational – Hinweis, Idee, Nutzung
- Experimental – zum Experimentieren
- Proposed Standard – Vorschlag für Standard
- Draft Standard – Begutachtung von mindestens zwei unabhängigen Implementierungen
- Standard – offizieller Standard STDn
- Historic – nicht mehr benutzt
